How to Winterize A Boat Motor

Properly winterizing your boat motor is essential to ensure its longevity and performance when the next boating season arrives. Harsh winter conditions can cause damage to internal components, leading to costly repairs. Follow these steps to safeguard your motor during the off-season.

Tools and Materials Needed

Marine engine antifreeze
Fogging oil
Fuel stabilizer
Oil and oil filter (if applicable)
Socket wrench and other basic tools
Freshwater source (hose or flush muffs)
Bucket (optional, for outboards)
Grease gun with marine-grade grease
Rags and gloves

Step 1: Flush the Engine

For Outboards: Attach flush muffs to the water intake and connect them to a garden hose. Run the engine for about 10-15 minutes to flush out salt, dirt, and debris. If you're using a bucket, submerge the lower unit in water and run the engine.
For Inboards/IOs: Connect a freshwater source to the flushing port or use a similar method outlined in your owner’s manual. Allow the engine to flush for 10-15 minutes.

Step 2: Treat the Fuel System

Add a high-quality fuel stabilizer to the gas tank. This prevents fuel from breaking down and forming deposits in the system.
Run the engine for a few minutes to circulate the stabilized fuel through the system, ensuring the carburetor or injectors are treated.

Step 3: Change the Oil and Filter (Inboard and Four-Stroke Outboards)

Warm up the engine slightly before draining the oil to help it flow more easily.
Replace the oil filter and refill with the manufacturer-recommended oil.
Dispose of used oil responsibly at a designated recycling center.

Step 4: Fog the Engine

Outboards: While the engine is running at idle, spray fogging oil into the air intake or carburetor. Continue until the engine stalls or a significant amount of smoke is produced.
Inboards/IOs: Remove the spark plugs and spray fogging oil directly into each cylinder. Rotate the engine manually a few times to coat the cylinder walls thoroughly.

Step 5: Drain and Protect Cooling System

Drain any residual water from the cooling system to prevent freezing. Refer to your owner’s manual for specific drain plug locations.
Fill the cooling system with marine engine antifreeze. Use a product rated for your region’s lowest temperatures.

Step 6: Lubricate Moving Parts

Use a marine-grade grease to lubricate the propeller shaft and other moving components.
Inspect and replace any worn-out seals or O-rings.

Step 7: Inspect and Store the Battery

Disconnect the battery cables and clean the terminals.
Store the battery in a cool, dry place on a maintenance charger to keep it in optimal condition.

Step 8: Cover and Store the Motor

Wipe down the motor to remove any dirt, grime, or salt residue.
Apply a corrosion inhibitor to exposed metal surfaces.
Cover the motor with a breathable engine cover to protect it from dust and moisture.
Store the boat in a sheltered area, if possible, to minimize exposure to harsh weather.

Additional Tips

Always refer to your engine’s owner’s manual for specific instructions and recommendations.
Perform a visual inspection of hoses, belts, and clamps, replacing any damaged parts.
Ensure the motor is in an upright position during storage to prevent water from pooling inside.
